Halloween Spooktacular2nd - 10th November 2007 |
The Main Street Theatre Company is particularly noted for enthusiasm and dedication, but also for attention to detail. So a show based upon Hallowe'en meant that the hall was decorated with skeletons, ghosts and a swaying chandelier, the programme, and even the tickets, were in keeping and the tables were lit by pumpkin candles. Naturally the costumes were superb. The spooky sound effects got us into the mood and the show opened with Macbeth's witches cavorting with gusto around a smoking cauldron. It continued with song and dance (extremely well choreographed), eerie tales of ghosts and ghouls, and comedy as the "Almost Spooked" television team visited Bo-Diddly Manor in Little Glennos. In between items the resident hump-backed Butler (Neil Marshall) told us true tales of Halloween from all over the world. Kevin Gilbert read us a terrifying poem, "The Trap", made all the more frightening by his white face and black eyes - he wore black contact lenses, (see what I mean about attention to detail?). However his later rendition of "The Little Yellow God" caused hilarity, and soaked the front row! The "Dance Macabre" with skeletons in UV light was excellent, and "All I ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera, sung by newcomers Byron and Sonya Greenhow, was beautiful. However the most memorable item of the evening for a lot of people was a story told by Janet Lord. She wore no special costume, used no props and told us a tale that was so believable and so terrifying... well, I won't spoil it for those of you who will be going to see the show this week, but be assured, Janet, we did NOT stop the car going home! A spooky, funny show well up to MSTC's high standards! Written by Vivien Window - Article printed in Harborough Mail, November 2007
