Panto at the OK Corral28th Nov to 6th Dec 2008 |
"Panto at the OK Corral" produced by the Main Street Theatre Company in Great Glen made me remember what "amateur" means. Not second rate- but "for love". The MSTC obviously loved doing this pantomime and we loved watching it.
I have come across better panto scripts with many more jokes, but I haven't laughed as much in ages. The performances were slick, fast moving and filled with enthusiasm.
The wonderfully comic Kevin Gilbert played Dame Winnie Pegg, and Byron Greenhow was the "evil" sheriff, punishing the booing audience with a water pistol - and yes I got soaked! His real-life wife Sonya was principal boy Clint Westwood, (great voice!) and naturally his principal girl was Dame Winnie's daughter "Calamity" Jane (Jenny Gilbert). So despite the unusual setting all the usual pantomime characters were there. Sam Hayes was "James the Jessie" the cheerful Buttons type character and Richard Palmer and Neil Marshall were a well matched comedy duo, Butch Casserole and the Suntanned Kid. We even had a pantomime horse. The songs and dances were lively and well choreographed, especially those performed by Diamond Lil and her girls (Janet Lord, Mandy Dearsley and Maria Smith).
What made this pantomime so unusual (apart from wonderful accents!) was the sheer fun that the cast were having, sweeping the audience with them so that we felt part of the show. This is "Village Hall Pantomime" at its very best. Great Glen is lucky.
